From nameless goblins to software fairies, Japanese popular representations of anthropomorphic creatures are imaginative and often useful. What does this phenomenon tell us about Japanese thought and culture? This lecture will examine some of the countless mascot kyara ‘characters’ who live mostly outside the covers of manga and anime and discuss their domestic and globalized contexts.
